Celebrations mark new Montgomery school openings

Sweltering heat couldn't keep parents, city, business and school leaders from turning out to dedicate the two latest addi¬tions to the Montgomery Public Schools family.

The celebrants came out Tuesday morning to mark the opening of the new Johnnie R. Carr Junior High schools, located in east Montgomery. Among those attending the ribbon cuttings were new Superintendent Barbara Thompson, school board members, representatives from the County Commission and City Council and Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange. Some of Carr's relatives were also on hand for the celebration.

"It's a wonderful day," Thompson said.

The new $21.5 million Carr Junior High School is another symbol of the community's effort in recent years to build new schools out east. It also represents the legacy of its namesake, who is sometimes called one of the most important figures from the civil rights movement.

The new junior high school is named after Johnnie R. Carr who lived well into her 90s and spent her life committed to working in the community and for equality issues, school leaders said.

"She was a pillar for the city, state and nation," said Principal Vince Johnson.

Ross added, "She didn't waste her life."

Arlam Carr, Carr's son, said his mother would be proud of the new 118,000-square-foot school that will usher in the first day of classes Monday with 800 students.

"This is a very special day for us as a family," Carr said.

"This is indeed an exciting time for our school system," Thompson said.
